After my first teaching practice, I
can say that it was a nice experience. Though I did not have too much time to
plan the lesson, I really took advantage of the hours I got. More than nervous,
I felt I was anxious. The day finally had come, and I was ready to teach. I
arrived early to the classroom since I had some material to organize. The class
started and, at the very beginning, I was a bit nervous but not as I expected
to be. I made clear some points I considered to be necessary before starting the
lesson. I talked about how discipline and respect are important in a class.
Having clarified those two points, I encouraged my students to be self-confident;
I told them something I was told by one of my teachers. “The worst thing that
can happen is that you make a mistake, and if that happens we just correct”; furthermore, mistakes are proof that we are trying ,I said. Then students notice that sometimes it is necessary to make mistakes in
order to learn something.
Afterwards, I started with my
lesson. First, my students played “hangman”. I used the game as a warm up
activity. I prepared some materials for that class, so I started with a collage
since the topic I taught was professions. Then, I use a chart with some
information which matched with the collage. I tried to involve my students the
most possible I could at the beginning of the class as the next steps were very
controlled, and they mostly will work individually. The next point on the
agenda was some exercises on determiners. It was a written activity. For that,
I gave my students a piece of paper and some minutes to complete them. Later
on, I checked the exercise along with them by individually asking some people
to respond. In a while, I had passed to the next moment of the lesson. In this
case, my students had to participate orally. I asked a series of questions to
each of them; however, I was asking them to respond either positive or negative
since that was the aim of the activity.
Finally, my part of the session had
come to the end. The activity consisted on some drills based on some sentences
which the students had to change into questions. I asked individual questions; everybody participated, and it was in that way that my first teaching practicum
finished.
Hello George! It is nice to know that you did well in your first class!! The refelction you shared with your students is beautiful and interesting. I was like you at the begining of my class, I thought that I was going to be very nervious, but the time I had was nice as well. Congrats my friend!!
ReplyDeleteHey dude! That was a very good class. I know we have to improve, but I guess that everything we studied last years has been very good to apply. Let's see how we do next time.
ReplyDeleteHi George!! I agree with alma. To start with that kind of thoughts make students aware and eager to learn; in other words, it gives them the confidence they need to develop themselves in the class.
ReplyDeleteI seems you took the control of your class from the beginning. You didn't have any serious problem which is nice. Congratulations and keep working hard!!!
hey George! such a nice task you developed....let me tell you that it is really difficult to prepare a class in one night, but when you see that people is colaborating with you, you know that it was worthy!
